Job Description:
Why This Role Exists At Olson Custom Designs, we don't just make
parts—we reinvent American manufacturing through excellence and
truthfulness. Our Swiss turn operations are the backbone of the
precision work that helps our aerospace, defense, and medical
device clients achieve their missions. This role exists because
even the best programs fail without flawless execution. As a setup
technician, you're the critical link between engineering intent and
manufacturing reality—ensuring every job runs right the first time,
every time. What You'll Do Execute precision setups. You'll prepare
Swiss-type CNC turning centers and mill-turns for production by
selecting and installing the correct tooling, work holding devices,
guide bushings, and collets for each job. You'll load programs
created by our programmers, establish accurate work offsets and
tool offsets, and verify proper setup through meticulous first
article inspection. Prove out programs. Working from setup sheets
and engineering drawings, you'll run first articles to validate
that programs produce parts meeting all specifications. You'll
measure critical dimensions using micrometers, calipers, pin
gauges, and optical comparators, ensuring conformance to tolerances
of ±0.0002" or tighter before releasing jobs to production.
Troubleshoot and adjust. When issues arise, you'll diagnose the
root cause—whether it's tooling wear, offset drift, or fixturing
problems—and make necessary adjustments. You'll work within
established parameters to fine-tune feeds, speeds, and tool
positions to maintain quality and optimize cycle times. Maintain
and document. You'll keep machines properly maintained, organized,
and ready for the next job. You'll document setup details, tool
changes, and any adjustments made, creating records that support
our quality system and help future setups run smoother. Collaborate
for excellence. You'll communicate with programmers about program
issues, work with quality assurance on inspection concerns, and
coordinate with production supervisors to meet schedule
requirements while maintaining our uncompromising standards. What
You'll Bring Hands-on experience. 2-4 years of experience setting
up and operating Swiss-type CNC turning machines in a production
environment. You've worked from setup sheets and engineering
drawings to prepare machines that consistently produce quality
parts. Technical knowledge. Strong understanding of Swiss-turn
tooling, work holding, and setup procedures. Familiarity with
Fanuc, Siemens, Tornos, or similar controls. You know how different
cutting tools, insert geometries, and setup configurations affect
part quality across materials like stainless steel, titanium,
aluminum, brass, and exotic alloys. Blueprint reading skills.
Ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings with
GD&T callouts and tight tolerances. You understand what the
print requires and how to verify that your setup will deliver it.
Measurement proficiency. Working knowledge of precision measuring
instruments including micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, pin
gauges, and optical comparators. You're comfortable performing
first article inspections and in-process verification. Bonus
qualifications. Experience in medical device, aerospace, defense,
or other high-precision manufacturing. Familiarity with lean
manufacturing principles, 5S workplace organization, and AS9100 or
ISO 13485 quality systems. What You'll Experience You'll work in
our climate-controlled manufacturing facility alongside a team
committed to excellence. This position requires standing for
extended periods, lifting up to 50 lbs, and working with precision
machinery. Standard shift with overtime opportunities based on
production needs. Why OCD We're AS9100 and ISO 13485 certified,
serving the aerospace, defense, and medical device industries with
precision manufacturing that meets the highest quality standards.
We've built our reputation on technical excellence, uncompromising
quality, and a commitment to integrity in everything we do. When
you join OCD, you're joining a company that believes American
manufacturing can and should lead the world—and you'll have the
training, support, and resources to help make that vision real.
